  • Many small business owners do not bother with a press kit, possibly because they think a press kit is only for the press. In my opinion, the term "press kit" is misleading because press kits are not just what their name implies.

  • When the “experts” tell you that you need a press kit for your small business, you’re probably wondering why on earth you need one. At least, that's what you’ll wonder if you think a press kit is just for the press. But the term "press kit" is misleading, if you ask me because press kits are not just what their name implies.

  • I prefer to call them small business information kits or information packs because that’s what they really are. They are designed to inform everyone, not just the press, about you and your business.

  • Once you have a small business information pack, you’ll find that you often hand it out when someone asks for information about your business -- who you are, what you do, and how you can be of use to the customer. You’ll probably find that you hand out almost as many information folders as you do business cards.

  • Sometimes it makes more sense to just hand out your business card, but sometimes you may want to give someone more information than what’s on your business card.

  • Let us say you’re at a party and someone asks you what you are doing. You would probably just give them your business card. But your business card only gives this business contact the briefest information about your company.

  • So you could also ask them for their name and address and send them an information packet the next day. Sending the information pack the next day is also an important reminder of the evening’s conversation.

  • On the other hand, if you are a plumbing company, you should contact contractors in your area to see if they are interested in subcontracting your company from time to time, or better yet, all the time!

  • If you just send them a business card, you probably won’t get very far. Even a well-written letter introducing your company along with your business card would probably not be as effective as a full information pack.

  • You can think of your business card as the “who and the where and a little bit of the what” of the six interview questions — who, what, where, when, why, and how. Your card will likely include your business name, contact information, and possibly a slogan, motto, or tagline that speaks to what you do.

  • Your information packet, on the other hand, answers all the questions. It tells people who and where you are, just like your business card. But instead of a little line that hints at what you do, your information pack tells people exactly what you do. How well this happens depends on how good your copy is.

  • He tells them how to buy (e.g. with your convenient order form, by phone or fax, with cash, check, or credit card) and when to buy (today, now, before the special offer expires).

  • There’s no room on the business card to tell people why they should buy from you, but there is on your information packet. And not just by saying that you are the biggest, the best, and, of course, the most innovative.

  • The real secret is to convince people that they can’t do without your product or service. Remember that your information package, along with a good description of your product or service, should be seen from your customers’ point of view. Everyone wants to know how they can benefit from your offer. How you can save them time, how you can save them money, or how you can make their lives a little easier.

  • A final word on the presentation of your small business identity package. It’s almost as important as what you say. A professional appearance can go a long way to reassuring potential customers that your small business is the one they want to do business with.

  • Without one, you will not be able to compete with large companies, and you’ll be miles ahead of the small businesses that don’t have one. And speaking of a professional image, imagine how your small business will be perceived if you have the ultimate professional image -- a matching corporate identity package, information package, and small business website.
